MosquitosThere are approximately 2,700 different species of mosquitos. Mosquitoes have six legs, a pair of veined wings and can only eat liquids. Only females will bite and affect you, as the males only sip plant nectar. However not all species of mosquitoes do bite. When a female bites, an anticoagulant is injected into the skin to keep the victims blood flowing. Female mosquitoes who drink blood have the potential to carry illness and disease between animals. Moose particularly feed off the aquatic plants found in the bogs and streams of the Taiga. Some distinctive features of the moose include its size, its overhanging muzzle and a flap of skin that hangs from their throat (called a bell.) Moose feed on woody plants during winter, but in Summer mostly live off water plants by wading in the water, although they can also swim well. Eurasian BeaverThe Eurasian Beaver is the largest European rodent. They feed on barks and twigs in the Winter and in the Summer they feed on a wider variation of vegetation. Eurasian Beavers build intricate dams and lodges, but will sometimes build a simple riverbank to enter underwater. Snowshoe RabbitThe Snowshoe Rabbit, is also sometimes called the 'varying hare'. In Summer their coat is dark brown and in Winter their coat turns white, with a black outline on their ears. The Snowshoe Rabbit is most active at night and in the early morning, as they eat grass and juicy green plants in the Summer. In the Winter they feed on twigs, shoots and buds. Their population depends highly on predator interactions and food availability. For more information, see the link below. http://www.mbgnet.net/sets/taiga/animals/
European Red SquirrelThe body of a European Red Squirrel is from 20-24cm long. Their main food source is from conifer cones. In the Winter they also eat fruit and fungi. The local climate alters the length of the breeding season for European Red Squirrels. If a female has 2 litters, most commonly with 3 young in each litter, that is considered a good year. European Red Squirrels young are born in a drey (a nest.) For more information, see the link below. http://www.mbgnet.net/sets/taiga/animals/
