Snowshoe Rabbit
The Snowshoe Rabbit uses the 'k' selection (slower and fewer) reproductive strategy. They give birth to a litter of 1-8. The average litter size is about 3 young. A disadvantage of this, is that the females can have up to four litters per year, meaning they can have a lot of young each year. The young are left alone in their nests for the first few weeks, however the mother is always nearby for feeding purposes and protecting them from predators. The mother will come back particularly at night to nurse the young, but will leave again shortly after, while the male offers no care at all.
